Maybe you’re dreading talking with others about your unplanned pregnancy because you feel like no one will understand what you’re going through.

If you’re considering abortion, you might fear what those closest to you will think.

Legally, you do not have to include your partner in your pregnancy decision, but talking through your options with those who know you well might be surprisingly helpful.

If you’ve been avoiding talking with your partner about your pregnancy decision, continue reading for tips on preparing to share your heart with your partner.

Sharing with Your Partner

1. Prioritize Your Safety

If you’re in an abusive relationship or fear that the news of your pregnancy or desire for an abortion will lead to violence, call the National Domestic Violence Hotline (1-800-799-SAFE)  to create a plan to keep you safe.

Never meet alone with your partner if you fear they might harm you, and if you’re ever in immediate danger, call 911 and leave immediately.

2. Prepare for the Conversation

After establishing that you’re safe, you can prepare for the conversation by looking inward and considering your motivation for an abortion. Ask yourself why you think an abortion is your best option.

If you’re having a difficult time sorting through your feelings about the pregnancy, you may consider meeting with a counselor, faith leader, or friend. Doing so can ensure you’ve thoroughly considered all your options and how your pregnancy decision may impact you.

3. Make a Plan

When choosing where to meet your partner, remember that you’ll be discussing personal information that you may not want others to hear. You likely want to pick an environment that provides privacy and allows you to feel comfortable sharing freely.

4. Gather the Facts

Before meeting with your partner, learning more about your pregnancy and your options with an ultrasound scan can provide you with valuable information to share with your partner. An ultrasound can give you information about the age, location, and viability of your pregnancy, which all help determine if you’re eligible for an abortion.

5. Listen to Your Partner’s Insight

While you may feel you’ve already decided, your partner may share something you have not considered.

Even if you feel confident in your path forward, consider discussing your options with your partner. He may surprise you by stepping up and offering to support you through your pregnancy and your future in unexpected ways.
